Harmony Explosion! Camp (HXC)
Harmony Explosion! Camp (HXC) is a four-day a cappella
seminar for teachers and students to interest and involve high school students in
four-part a cappella harmony and to provide positive ideas about leisure singing.
The Harmony Explosion! Camp features traditional male glee club music as well as
barbershop harmony that’s arranged especially for the young male voice.
I recently took a group of highly talented students to the Harmony Explosion
Camp in Denton, Texas, courtesy of the River Cities Jubilee Barbershop
Chorus of Shreveport. I watched every rehearsal with great fascination
— the instructors were superb, and the group of ninety or so singers under their
direction learned an incredible amount of vocal technique in a short period of time.
Mainly, tonal color variance and listening skills were the focus of every rehearsal,
as well as volume control, projection, and proper enunciation. It was a pleasure
to hear the large group slowly “morph” into a strong, cohesive unit with a moving,
energetic wave of musical sound. I learned quite a bit at the camp, too — Barbershop
music gained my respect that weekend, and the boys were thrilled to have been offered
such a positive experience.
Thanks again.
